The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation is seeking a
Small Craft Operator to operate workboats, perform inspections, and service navigation aids within the Office of Lock Operations & Marine Services in Massena, New York. The ideal candidate must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential and have demonstrated experience as a marine vessel operator on the St. Lawrence River or Great Lakes, specifically in safely operating vessels and maintaining deck machinery without direct supervision.
Duties: - Operates a variety of workboats on surveys, buoy runs, inspections, service calls, emergency response, maintenance and engineering projects, and to transport personnel and supplies, etc.
- Keeps boats in operating condition by making routine repairs.
- Performs inspection and maintenance of navigation aids which consist of buoys, and fixed lights. Visits/services each navigation aid that is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway within the territorial waters of the United States.
- Corrects malfunctions of lights and buoys upon receipt of notice from Supervisor or Director of Lock Operations and Marine Services, or their designee.
- When assisting Engineering personnel and/or performing Marine Division work, operates surveying instruments and equipment both on land and water.
- Receives assistance from and provides direction to laborers or marine helpers.
Qualifications: To meet the minimum qualifications for the
Small Craft Operator position, candidates must satisfy the requirements for either the WG-08 or WG-10 grade level:

WG-08 Entry Requirements: Candidates must be eligible to obtain a
TWIC, USCG Medical Certificate, and
Merchant Mariner Credential (OUPV) within one year of hire, and possess experience in operating deck machinery, maintaining marine facilities, or servicing aids to navigation.

WG-10 Full Performance Requirements: Applicants must already hold a valid
TWIC, USCG Medical Certificate, and
Merchant Mariner Credential (OUPV or greater), with the ability to upgrade to a 50/100 Ton Master Endorsement as required.
- Specialized Marine Experience: Qualification for the WG-10 level requires documented experience safely operating marine vessels under 100 gross tons, performing complex maintenance on aids to navigation, and supporting specialized marine projects.
